Tobi Nishikawa

Licensed Marriage And Family Therapist

As an adolescent growing up in the Pasadena area, I knew I wanted to be a psychotherapist. I am a people person who seeks to understand and embrace each person’s own unique experience and identify. It is a privilege to come alongside my clients to help them, whether it be in receiving healing from past trauma, gaining insight into what drives their behavior or developing more effective ways of being in relationship with those they love. My goal is to provide a nonjudgmental space for my clients: child or adult; single or in a relationship; of all religions (or none): all ethnic backgrounds, all sexual/gender identities; basically, all persons who are willing to allow me the opportunity of working with them to achieve their therapeutic goals. Though I am extensively trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and find it to be highly effective in working with all types of symptoms and behaviors, I am very person centered in my approach and will work with you to develop a treatment plan that best fits you.

Even after over 20 years of working in the field of mental health in various settings, including residential settings with chronically mentally ill adults diagnosed with various forms of psychosis and severely abused foster youth struggling with behavioral issues, my resolve as a mental health professional has not waned, but instead, has deepened. Therefore, even while working here with Self Care Counseling, I continue to be involved in nonprofit work with disenfranchised persons (foster youth, immigrants, homeless, etc.) to ensure that all persons receive the mental health treatment (or any help) they seek.

My own self care includes spending time with my family and friends, working out, seeing the ocean, eating good food and watching animal videos.
